Someone mentioned TGA and the '59 Sound on BTX, the Springsteen forum. I looked up the album on Amazon, but saved it for later in my basket. This was in mid/late 2008.

I only actually bought the album in March of this year. I had not heard the band before then. I liked what I heard, thought the refs. to Bruce and Tom Petty were fun, but the song I really got to love was the '59 Sound. I got the chords, played it on the guitar.

I went back on Amazon and listened to the brief clips from Sink or Swim and thought it sounded similarly good (sometimes first albums are quite different), so I ordered that and the EP. I got Sink or Swim, I listened once and ... I knew this was the best band I had come across in 29 years (since I discovered Bruce). I think Sink or Swim is a masterpiece; Grammys should have been rained down upon it.

I couldn't believe I had waited that long, and in the process had missed the last lot of UK gigs. I am trying to make up for it now. I looked for info, boots, interviews etc., and as it was all so scattered, I put it on a TGA website of my own, partly as a 'thank you' to the band, and to help spread the news. And I discovered this forum, and I'm very grateful for the company ...

I really love the Replacements and read a couple of reviews of bands that sounded like the 'mats. One of them was the '59 Sound. The other review sounded better but could only find the TGA in hmv. Bought it and didn't play it until I went out in my car that night. Could not believe how great it sounded. Bought SoS and the ep straight away and still can't beleive how great they sound.

Eventually bought the cd of the other band that the review said sounded like the 'mats and it was crap!

I first saw them on the front cover of Kerrang! magazine last year as the band everyone should know about. After that I kept seeing them everywhere in different magazine, but never really took a moment to give them a proper listen, but in February this year I was in Manchester doing some shopping as you do, and came across the CD in HMV for 10 and I bought it, from then on I never looked back. I think they truly are one of the greatest bands of our time.

A friend from school had recommended them to me, he normally had a good choice of music so I went to their website (I was unaware that The '59 Sound had just come out a week previous to my introduction to them) and listened to The '59 Sound, at first I wasn't a big fan of the song so I moved on. 1 more week goes by and I give them another listen, this time I listened to Here's Looking At You, Kid and I couldn't stop listening to it, I downloaded the song and had it on repeat for several days, listened to nothing else. I finally decided I should listen to their other stuff which was probably a good idea lol, and now they're pretty much all I listen to anymore Very Happy

Not as exciting of a story as others, but i had heard a lot of 'buzz' about them floating around the internet (probably just before the hype of the 59 sound coming out) and figured i should check them out. After checking a few torrent sites i was SOL so i kinda forgot about it. Im a big Against Me! fan so when i found out that Against Me! had them out on tour with them i decided i needed to look a little harder. Say I Won't (Recognize) was the first track i got and instantly knew i had to find it all. Smile
I wish i could go back to that day and hear them again for the first time.

I was a friends house playing board games and she was spinning The 59 Sound in the background. It caught my ear, I asked who it was, and I DL'd the album when I got home that night! Been hooked since.

We conversation about their music, and my friend pointed out the Springsteen connection. In my mind, I related them more to The Killers at the time, but I get it now.

And BTW, I did actually buy The 59 Sound legit later on. It was that good!

I had a friend over and we were watching MTV2, sometime last year, (maybe the summer?) and '59 Sound came on. We stopped talking and just watched it. I remember thinking I'll note that name down for later. I looked them up on their Myspace and ordered '59 Sound right away. And I hadn't been buying many CDs at the time. Loved every song. Got the other CDs shortly after.

Then they were in the UK about three times, all at times when I couldn't go or had noone to go with for one reason or another. Then I finally got to see them in June, right at the front and it was incredible. I'm well and truely hooked. Smile

I was another in the, seeing them in Kerrang magazine group.

Was working at the co-op (little conevience store), had Kerrang behind the counter just reading it, obviously the front cover caught my eye and read all about them, somehow I felt a connection with them before any music had been played, which is unusual because Kerrang are usually crap.

Noted down the name, went home, listened, ordered all 3 albums and the rest is history, then managed to find out they were playing at Reading which I was going to and became the biggest band of the weekend I had to see.

So, if I have to say anything to the co-op/Kerrang, it's thanks for introducing me to this brilliant band.

I saw them play on Conan last year and I thought their performance was good, so I decided to check out the rest of their music.

Someone on the punktastic forum recomended them I think, with a link to punknews where the whole of Sink or Swim was streaming. I fell in love with it straight away and ordered it right away. Been a devoted fan ever since!
It's very unusual for a band to have such an impact on me almost instantly, but there was just something about them that clicked with me right away.

Glastonbury. Wasn't there, but was watching it on tv, and was blown away by their set.

Got all TGA songs on my iPod now and been listening to them non-stop. Amazing band!

There is a travel company in the UK that specialises in trips to see Springsteen around the world called "Badlands". They work from a very small independent record shop that goes by the same name in Cheltenham (Gloucestershire) I had just booked to see Springsteen at Giants last year and popped in to pay them (about February / March time). Playing in the shop was "we came to dance" and that was that for me. They also introduced me to "the Hold Steady" and Jesse Malin for which I am most grateful!

I wouldn't have thought they'd have got a mention on an Arctic Monkeys fanboard. That's cool.

Badlans is a great outfit. I'm please to hear you dicovered Bruce through them. I'm part of their Ties That Bind club, so get all the regular set list emails and special news. I never seem to get any news via the official TGA news subscription I signed up for once upon a time.

Hi there, didn't discover Bruce through them - that was back in 1981 when a friends brother had a spare for Manchester on the River Tour (now I am at nearly 100 shows)! Ties that Bind is great - again been a member since inception and it has saved me a fortune over the years by not getting scalped for tickets- except once (some things are best forgotten)!!

They play some great music in the shop that's for sure. Off to Dublin with them at the weekend so you should be good! (hic)

Hah. I know how this goes. I've seen Pearl Jam almost 50 times (with 3 more shows in August). The scary thing is among my PJ friends, 50 isn't really all that many.

I've mentioned the Arctic Monkeys a couple of times on here. I know we had a discussion about them but I can't remember where!
