Damn, Ben Nichols (and the rest of the band) are ridiculously talented. Can't wait to see them again.

I was so excited for this NYE show with The Hold Steady that I bought an extra pair of tickets. I did the Hold Steady presale at 10am, and those were Standing floor seats only. Just now I saw Lucero offer a presale, and I purchased balcony seats from that. Of which I am going to keep the balcony seats.

So, if anyone is interested, I will be selling the two General Admission (Standing) tickets once I receive them. Face value - $35 each - if anyone would like them.

Lucero's @DayTrotter Session Coming out on Vinyl. Get it here

This is the fourth installation in the Daytrotter Presents vinyl series features two somewhat diverse groups -- Trampled By Turtles and Lucero. Both bands are stalwarts in their respective genres and we know they're both capable of putting back their share of beer and whiskey.

From: Dear Ben Nichols™: A Ben Nichols Fansite

When bobbyw24 and NTA Junkie tweeted about Ben from Lucero.....

Bobby Wilbert, of Lucero Die Hards, sent me his great into to Lucero and a video of Ben and Rick playin’ a song Bobby’s three year old had requested in advance. Adorable! (And Rick’s commentary. Hee!) -Lynette
I discovered Lucero via the Gaslight Anthem forum, Dimestore Saints. People posted now and then about Lucero so I Googled them and found a comely Mexican singer. It wasn’t my type of music, so I blew off all Lucero posts till a guy told me that I found the Lucero from Mexico and not the Lucero from Memphis. So I went to Spotify and heard “My Best Girl” and “Hold Me Close.” I was hooked. The first CD I bought was “Rebels, Rogues…”

Being a concert junkie, I had to see them live to see if they really affected me—which I was described to my high school friend Shannon as giving me chills. If their live show gave me chills the way that Springsteen shows did, I would really get into them. So, I checked on their site and son of bitch—in 3 weeks they were playing an old converted 7-11 store in St. Augustine Beach, Fla. called Cafe Eleven. I checked with my friend Tara who said the place was small—like 180 cap and told me to get tickets soon.

I invited a few of my lawyer friends and we headed to the beach. The opening band wasn’t bad and Lucero finally took the stage. I didn’t know too many songs but as the show progressed, we moved up close and Ben started with “Mom.” That’s when I got the chills—the guitar and Ben’s voice got to me—coupled with the fact that my mom has 4 boys all of whom moved away from home and 3 who live several hundreds of miles from her. Later they played “Heart’s of Fire” and I had no idea what it was or how rarely they play it—wonder if I will ever hear it live again.

That was all it took—I knew my wife wanted to see friends in St Pete and I saw that Lucero was playing Orlando and St Pete the next 2 nights. I got online and ordered tickets—even for Gainesville (which I later gave to Mary the Merch girl in Orlando). I called my friend Joe in Orlando and said—we are coming to see you, take you to a show and and the family needs a place to stay.

Joe and I headed to the Beacham, in Orlando which Ben later called “huge.” I talked to Ben at the bar before Lucero came on stage. I still didn’t know too many songs but I recall the disco ball there during “Slow Dancing.” Toward the end, Ben and Rick played “Mom” and I took a pic and posted it on my mom’s Facebook wall saying, “Mama, we’re still your boys.” As the show was ending, Ben said, “I’m going over to the bar across the street so anyone who wants to meet up for a drink….” I thought no way a rock star is gonna drink with fans—but what if he is serious? Joe was up for it and said let’s go to Lizzie’s and find out.

I went over and Ben was at the bar. I told him that I had seen them last night in St Augustine and I liked it so much that I decided to come to Orlando; he was appreciative. We were both drinking whiskey and Joe got a pic of us under a Heineken sign there. Ben went back to the bar and I was like—I gotta go talk to him some more. Joe was like—go for it.

I approached Ben and told him I liked that “song about his love for his guitar.” Ben was like “My Best Girl.” I told him I had learned of them just a few weeks ago and didn’t really know song titles well. Ben was like you did back-to-back shows with us. At that, my mind went to a blog post by photographer and fellow Lucero fan, Lorraine Schwartz. I pulled up Lorraine’s posts about seeing Lucero back-to-back and “Lucero: Where Have you Been All my Life” and read them with Ben on my cell phone. The I started tweeting Lorraine since I figured she’d be up at 2 AM —and she was. I told her what was going on and she tweeted she was like “Blushing!”

I showed Ben the part where Lorraine said that Lucero plays “music that makes your soul happy.” Ben smiled and turned his head a little with a grin and was like that made my day, give me a hug. I did, of course —a thought what an awesome person Ben is.I knew it was getting late so I told Ben I would see him tomorrow at Daddy Kool Records in St Pete for the in-store show. I told Ben that my 3 year old boy loves “When I was Young”—that he sang it on the way down I-95: “Oh, the days I let slip away.” I asked Ben if he could play it for my boy tomorrow. Ben was like we weren’t gonna play it, but you know what—I will for your son.

We got to Daddy Kool Records in St Pete. My wife and I were up front with our 2 kids. After a few songs Ben tuned his guitar and said, “I seem to remember last night in a drunken stupor, I promised somebody something.” Rick jumped in and said “Be careful” since my 3 and 5 year old kids were right up front. Ben and Rick played it and my kids sang along —and talked through the song.

I went on to see Lucero 6 more times from Florida to Maryland to Illinois after that and brought 20+ people to shows to see why I like this band so much.
