Thanks! I was going to but it seemed like way to much work. The full version of Mulholland Drive is even better than the sample clips!

(Intro Guitar Riff, Brian Howls)

You're educated now, and all grown up,
And traveled so well!
Do you still hear the sound of thunder while you lie up by yourself?
Like you waited on this cold, and made your plans for great escapes
And there used to be a movement in the way your dress would wave,
From your hips so down like electric through the cloud.

And I never could remember
How the roads went up in flames
And the way we ran away from all those sirens slinging names
Or how the moonlight kissed your face on that cold September night
And your raven-black hair held up with a bow on tight

(Epic Guitar Solo)

(There's still more to Howl, I just need time to transcribe it. Brian went a little Nirvana on me in the bridge and last verse, and it's really hard to make out the words with the crappy Amazon quality)

PostSubject: Handwritten (album) lyrics - with spoilers   Thu Jul 05, 2012 5:52 pm

I know there's the spoiler catchall thread but I didn't want the lyrics to get lost in that. Obviously this thread will be mostly spoilers right now as well since we haven't heard the majority of the album. So turn back now if you're trying to avoid them.

So the layout of the LP was posted on the store offering the Super Deluxe cd. Turns out that image was super high resolution and you can read the foreword by Nick Hornby as well as the lyrics. I've typed them up and figured I might as well post them as well. I'd expect a few typos throughout and the formatting/spacing may be funky especially on the unheard songs. The liner lists Mulholland Drive twice and omits Keepsake, so the full lyrics for that are missing. Hopefully the proofreaders caught this before it went to press.

Once again spoilers ahead... you've been warned

"45"

Have you seen my hands? Just look at 'em shake
And the song just keeps on repeating, drop the needle again
And I dance with your ghost, oh but that ain't the way...
I can't move on and I can't stay the same
And all my friends say...

"Hey hey, turn the record over
Hey hey, and I'll see you on the flip side
There you go, turn the key and engine over
Let her go, let somebody else lay at her feet"

Have you seen my heart? Have you seen how it bleeds?
And the nights are so long baby, out here in the deep
The tick, ticking of hours, lonely
I hear the alarm, I used to hear when she would sleep in my arms
But "Better Sense" says

"Hey hey, turn the record over
Hey hey, and I'll see you on the flip side
There you go, turn the key and engine over
Let her go, let somebody else lay at her feet"

And all my friends say...

"Hey hey, turn the record over
Hey hey, and I'll see you on the flip side
There you go, turn the key and engine over
Let her go, let somebody else lay at her feet"

Handwritten

Pull it out, turn it up, what's your favorite song?
That's mine, I've been crying to it since I was young
I know there's someone out there feeling just how I feel
I know they're waiting up, I know they're waiting to heal
And I've been holding my breath,
Are you holding your breath, for too many years to count?

And we waited for sirens that never come
And we only write by the moon, every wood handwritten
And to ease the loss of youth and how many years I've missed you
Pages plead forgiveness, every word handwritten

Let it out, let me in, take a hold of my hand
There's nothing like another soul that's been cut up the same
And did you wanna drive without a word in-between?
I can understand, you need a minute to breathe
And to sew up the seams... after all this defeat

And we waited for sirens that never come
And we only write by the moon, every wood handwritten
And to ease the loss of youth and the many, many years I missed you
Pages plead forgiveness, every word handwritten

Here, in the dark, I cherish the moonlight
I'm in love with the way you're in love with the night
And it travels from heart, to limb, to pen

And we waited for sirens that never come
And we only write by the moon, every word handwritten
And with this pen, I thee wed
From my heart to your distress

Here Comes My Man

How much time do you think that we have?
If I wanted to I could start over again
Let the good night decide who she wants me to find
And I'd never let you drop another tear in my eye, singing...
Oh sha la la, oh sha la la, listen, honey, here comes my man

And all my life I never had a chance
Don't you think I knew about all your pretty girlfriends?
But I waited for you, gave you time to decide
But you never saw it from anybody else's side
So I packed up my things and I faced up my doubts
You know, I think I will grow my hair back out
Never mind what you think, never mind what you like
I'll take it out to the street for somebody else to admire

Singing oh, sha la la, listen, honey, here comes my man

And maybe time will tell you
Why I got so much hell to sell you
Please, please understand me
You can't just dance around me
Maybe your work will love you
When I'm just not there to hold you
Maybe your pride can be your companion
Oh, but I just won't be there to stand for it
Not one more minute will I stand for it

You'll find me singing, baby..
Oh sha la la, oh sha la la listen, honey, here comes my man

Mulholland Drive

Did you sleep last night and do you remember dreams?
Do I ever cross your mind and do you ever think of me?
When you think about your life are there things you would reverse?
I still remember holding you, just out of sight of her
In the deep, dark parking lot pressed up against tmy car
With your hands around my neck I felt the pounding of your heart
And the summer night was giving in to the lure of Autumn's sway
I can't seem to forget that night or how I heard you say...

That I'd just die if you ever took your love away
Oh and I would just die if you you ever took your love away
Would you miss me if I was gone and the simple things were lost?
Would you ever wait on me to say
Oh, that I'd just die if you ever took your love away

And I can still recall the hour when you first let down your walls
I thought I might've died right there floating up above it all
But it scared you love, to need someone, so you killed it all instead
But in the mist on Mulholland I could've sworn I heard you say...

That I'd just die if you ever took your love away
Oh and I would just die if you you ever took your love away
Did you miss me when I was gone and the simple things we lost?
I was aching to hear you say
Oh, that I'd just die if you ever took your love away

And did you miss me when I'm gone
And the simple things we used to rely on?
Who care to wipe your tears away
Who came to bring back your dignity. baby?
And who came to drive you around this town
Like I used to drive you all around, with the radio on?
Through the mist on Mulholland...

Keepsake

It's been 31 years since she's been in your arms
but don't worry about Mama, Mama's got a good heart
And I'm not looking for your love, I'm only sniffing out blood
Just a little taste of where I came from
And at the bottom of this river

Too Much Blood

Are you scared this sounds familiar?
What if everybody knew the very trials and temptations that we put ourselves through?
Now I am no angel but I've got nothing to hide
Can you say the same thing for yourself tonight?

What can I keep for myself if I tell you my hell?
What would be left to take to my grave?
And what's left for you, my love, to save?
What's left for only you to take?
If I put too much blood on the page...
If I put too much blood on the page...
And if I just tell the truth are these only lies left for you
If I put too much love on the page?

And as my eternal witness to the pride and shame
Are you worried I'll say too much?
Are you scared they'll take me away?
Now I am no devil but I've got things on my mind
And they're gonna come out and they're gonna come up time to time

What can I keep for myself if I tell you my hell?
What would be left to take to my grave?
And what's left for you, my lover, to save?
What's left for only you to take?
If I put too much blood on the page...
If I put too much blood on the page...
And if I just tell the truth are there only lies left for you
If I put too much love on the page?

Howl

Hey wake it up! Hey shake it out!
Does anything still move you since you're educated now?
And all grown up and traveled so well
Do you still hear the sound of thunder while you lie up by yourself?
Like you waited on his call and made your plans for great escapes
And there used to be a movement in the way your dress would wave
From your hips on down like electric through the ground
Now do you blow it out come Friday night?
See, if you wanna you cand me on the hood under the moonlight
Radio, oh radio, do you believe there's still some magic left
Somewhere inside our souls
Like I waited on your call and made my plans to share my name
And I love the country movement in the way your dress would wave
From your hips on down like electric through the...
...sound of the cars rushing the rain on the boulevard
In this city by the sea that has always haunted me
And belonged to me somehow
Bless your waters and your doubts
Bless your waters
Bless your doubts

Biloxi Parish

I've been fumbling with your heartstrings and that's good enough for me
And if I've rained on one of your hours then I know I must be working
Try it on for size, my darling
See what a man you can make of me
I will eventually haunt you or you'll eventually be my queen
And I'll be with you through the dark
So that you do not go through the dark alone
Or on your own

I been down Biloxi Parish and that's all the same to me
I've found that nothing truly matters that you cannot find for free
I love you more than I can tell you and when you pass through from this world
I hope you ask to take me with you or that I won't have to wait to long
But until then I'll be with you through the dark
Yes, until then I'll be with you through the dark

And who else can say that about you baby?
Who else can say that about you now?
And who else can take all your blood and your curses?
Nobody I seen you hanging around
Seen you hanging around

And all of my heroes were failures or ghosts
Burned out in brilliant explosions alone
And all of the blood and sweat that they gave
Well, we took it all and we threw it away

And who else can say that about you baby?
Who else can say that about you now?
Who else can take all your blood and your curses?
Nobody I've seen you hanging around

And who else can say that about you baby?
Who else can say that about you now?
And who else can take all your blood and your curses?
Nobody I seen you hanging around
Seen you hanging around

Desire

What makes a man do the things that a man does
To be the very thing he perceives would capture your heart?
What does it feel like inside?
Does it hurt you at night?
Or does it keep you alive, and set you on fire, on fire?
I would give anything for the touch of your skin
Yes, I would burn here for years
Up in desire, desire

What makes a woman believe in a man such as me?
Unworthy to sit at your foot or your crown
I can only let you down
What does it feel like inside?
Does it hurt you at night?
Or does it keep you alive, and set you on fire, on fire?
I would give anything for the touch of your skin
Yes, I would burn here for years
Up in desire, desire

And some men spend their lives
Chasing the accolades of pride
But that just never crossed my mind
You were always on my mind
What does it feel like inside?
Does it hurt you at night?
Or does it keep you alive, and set you on fire, on fire?
I would give anything for the touch of your skin
Yes, I would burn here for years
Up in desire, desire

Mae

Stay the same don't ever change
'cause I'd miss your ways
With your Bette Davis eyes
And your mama's party dresss
While this city pumps its aching heart
For one more drop of blood
We work our fingers down to dust
While we wait for Kingdom Come
With the radio on
I wanna see you tonight
Would you come for a drive?
You can lean into me
And if you ain't been in love for a while
I was born beside a river
That flows to a raging sea
That will one day serve to quell
Or one day be the death of me
In my faded jeans and far away eyes
And salt carnival kiss
That all my former loves say
Was once magnificent
I wanna see you tonight
Would you come for a drive?
You can lean into me
And if you ain't oh, you ain't...
I wanna see you tonight
Would you come for a drive?
You can lean into me
And if you ain't been in love for a while
And still this city pumps its aching heart
For one more drop of blood
We work our fingers down to dust
While we wait for Kingdom Come
With the radio on
It's been so long Mae, so long

National Anthem

I never will forget you my American love
And I'll always remember you, wild as they come
And though if I saw you I'd pretend not to know
The place where you were in my heart is now closed
I already live with too many ghosts
And everybody, lately, is living up in space
Flying through transmissions on invisible airwaves
With everything discovered just waiting to be known
What's left for God to teach from His throne?
And who will forgive us when He's gone?
So take what you need now, honey
And do what you like
Don't worry about me, Mama, I'm all right.
And I can't stand the weather, no, I never liked the rain
We drink on the job, then we go home early
And I remember she used to look so good in that dress
Now she just screams how I promised her more than this
Take it easy baby, it ain't over yet
So take what you need now, honey
And do what you like
Don't worry about me, Mama, I'm all right
And if there's something you need...
And if there's something you find...
Whatever gets you through the night
Whatever gets you through the night
I never will forget you my American Love
And I'll always remember you wild as they do come

Interesting.

it's a good read and here is as good as spot as any to post it.

Quote :
It would be stupid to try and tell you that the music you're listening to is like nothing you've ever heard before. The songs on the Gaslight Anthem's latest album are three or four minutes long, most of them, and they're played on loud electric guitars, and there are drums, and to be honest, if you haven't heard anything like this before, then you're probably listening to the wrong band anyway. What's great about the Gaslight Anthem is that there's an assumption you'll have heard something like this before - on the first Clash album, or on Born To Run, or the first Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album, or maybe on a Little Richard record. That's what hooked me in. I've been listening to rock'n'roll for forty years, and so maybe I'm too old to be writing this stuff, but on the other hand, maybe I know what I'm talking about, too: believe me, I know a lot of stuff sounds tired and derivative, and makes you feel as though rock music is exhausted. It's hard to find new ways to tell stories and write songs; even clothes made out of meat won't do you much good if your music is 1980's dance-pop.

So you have two choices. The first is this: you do something nobody's ever done before. You play the nose-flute underwater, put it through a computer backwards, and get a black Japanese guy to rap over the top. Or you write a novel using only consonants. Or you make a movie which nobody can see. And that's all cool, but nobody will want to read your second novel written only using consonants, so then you'll have to write one using only vowels. And the second is this: you think, write, play and sing as though you have a right to stand at the head of a long line of cool people - you recognise that the Clash and Little Richard got here first, but they're not around any more, so you're going to carry on the tradition, and you're going to do it in your own voice, and with as much conviction and authenticity and truth as you can muster. And if you can pull that off, you'll be amazed at how fresh you can sound.

And the Gaslight Anthem sound fresh. Anyone who has been frustrated by anything - a girl, a boy, a job, a self (especially that) - can listen to this music and feel understood and energised. (And if I feel energised, Lord knows what they're going to do to you.) And I'm beginning to suspect that they, like, read books, too. 'Great Expectations' - now there's a great title for a song. And here, 'Howl' - there's another one. Rockers who read. Songwriters who are not scared to go head-to-head with everyone else in rock's great tradition. The Gaslight Anthem are my kind of people

The best part is as you were writing those someone actually put lyrics up every song in another thread. haha

I just saw. I guess it's all for the better, my lyrics are terrible. And I'm going to get in trouble for derailing the thread.

Clap You had me fooled!

You had me fooled too! Embarassed You need to write more, Matt, because those weren't terrible at all. And I imagined Brian singing them. You are terrible! You are officially disowned! Razz

I tried my best to take the bit of vocal melody from the sample and throw in a bunch of Brian words, like sirens and roads and moonlight. Razz

I almost felt a tiny bit bad that you took it hook, line, and sinker, but I guess now that the full lyrics have been posted, it makes it okay.

A bit.

UGH, I want to read those lyrics so bad but I think that would really ruin the album for me. BIG TIME!!! One thing leaves and then another thing comes to haunt me.

I'm not going to read them. The lyrics are my favorite part of a song. That's too much ruined for me.

Yeah, for some reason I feel like it is easier than the song samples. Probably because when I listen, I don't have to read.

Not going to spoil the lyrics for myself, but the foreword is pretty cool.
