"With the punks and the dimestore saints."
-Navesink Banks

I always took "dimestore saint" to be a small town good guy/girl that people outside that particular community (whether it's a town or small group of friends, in this case a group that could possibly hang outside a dimestore all afternoon) don't know about.

Still baffled by the term dimestore though. Is it like Poundland in the UK? Or a charity shop?

Sadly I left Omaha aged 3 months and have never been repatriated!

"in the dimestores and the bus stations, people talk of situations..."

Thanks guys! I crossed the North American continent by bus four times in 1992 and never came across a dimestore - although I did find Gracelands!

Did you check the photo I linked?

Back in the day it was just a neighborhood store that sold a variety of items from food to medical and in some places, also had a counter where people ordered milkshakes, sandwiches, burgers, etc. You ever see Walk The Line? The store where June (Reese) gets scolded about divorce is a dimestore. Also called a "five & dime" because I think things were priced at 5 or 10 cents at some point in history.

Woolworth's was like that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_and_dime#Europe lists other examples...

"United Kingdom: Poundland, Poundworld, Poundwise, Poundstretcher, 99p Stores"

And a more detailed description: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-five-and-dime.htm

Cheers for the links.

Woolworths went bust here a few years ago - did it happen there too? Although as we liked to call it - Woolies - wasnt a dimestore.

Woolworth's went out of business in the U.S. in 1997, even though it remained in business in a few other countries (thank you Wikipedia!). I think it was the first five and dime store in America. I'm not positive, but I think the "five and dime" prices continued more or less into the 1950s or so, but it retained the dimestore feel even after that, kind of like a small town general store.

For some reason, I always suspected that the use of the term "dimestore saint" in Navesink Banks was inspired by the use of the phrase "dimestore hood" in this memorable scene from the excellent film, Stand By Me:

I can see Brian being a big fan of this movie particulary since it takes place in 1959 and the soundtrack is a great embodiment of that '59 sound.

Is it because they actually sang "Stand By Me" before "...Woody"? Wink

^^^ haha Random.

I always thought, like "NeverTrustAJunkie" that it's some kind of small town good guy/girl.

But, yeah, we don't have any dimestores where I'm from either...we do, on the other hand, have dollar stores. Maybe they're like what the dimestores of the 50's are today. A place where you can go buy junk for really really cheap! (oops...this was already discussed, my bad)

Yeah that's exactly it. Only I think dimestores were set up as hangouts with the luncheon counters and such. Times aren't as friendly now. Online is the town hangout now. Le sigh.

Ah... So, it'd be like a dollar store with an Ice Cream shop. Smile

Yeah, I hear ya, online is the new town hangout now....too bad they don't have dimestores online to hang out at. Laughing

I heard the phrase a Dimestore Cowboy before (American History class in 11th grade). It means "one who hangs around the dimestore, looking for a date." So Could Dimestore Saint be one who is looking for redemption, or someone to redeem and heal, much like an actual saint does?

Laughing Only they don't sell stuff here...well, except Gaslight tickets! I guess that pretty much makes up for it. Laughing

^ And, yeah, that is a good proposition. I guess someone will need to consult with their American History teacher...

As pointed out before, and I've known, a dimestore is an early convenience store/ restaurant.

Now being from NJ, I can tell you (as many people from NJ know), hanging out in front of convenience stores and simaliar places as such (7/11, dunkin donuts, etc) is huge - especially with the punk scene.

I actually had a conversation with benny at the asbury show who told me he used to hang out at a store in my town late at night, when he was younger, with the punk group.

So my guess dimestore saints - just means the people who hang out in front of stores late at night. Saints can be a term used as dedicated/devoted.

Ah... But do you ever feel like "redeemed" or something when you hang out there? Maybe it's a good spot for redemption man. Ya know, just bring a guitar along and play some Bob Marley or some Joe Strummer. Know what I'm saying?

I'm slightly confused the point you are trying to make Razz

I'll I'm saying is that when Brian said dimestore saints, he ment the kids who hung out in front of convenience stores. Which i knew kids, and was briefly one, who would do that. Its quite common in nj. Like hanging out at diners.

So Brian being brian, likes to be classy with his lyrics and used "dimestore" because dimestore was an early form of a convenience store.

Now if youre being philosophical like "what makes a person a dimestore saint" or something like that - then use your imagination I guess

Ah, like you feel "redeemed" like a new person or "free" or something when you hang out there with your punk friends. Like the Marley's Redemption Songs...

lol!
