This. I like all the albums almost equally, and it really depends on what I feel like listening at the time. And like the other albums, there really isn't a song on SoS that I wouldn't listen to (yes, I even like "Red in the Morning").

Agreed, one of the things I love the most about Gaslight is the variety between their albums. I don't think I could pick a least favourite! As debuts go though, Sink or Swim is pretty solid imo.

Also I'm beginning to think I'm the only person who's favourite is American Slang Laughing

nope....american slang is my favorite too!

Its been awhile since i posted, but i had put my 2 cents in here.

I'd say most of the songs on SoS sound very much the same.
I'm all for differences of opinion, to each their own, but you lost me when you said that most of SoS sounded the same. To say that We Came to Dance and Red at Night or I'da Called You Woody, Joe or Contender and Drive or Red in the Morning and 1930 sound the same is pretty ridiculous to me and doesnt seem like an issue of opinion. I find '59 Sound and American Slang to be very similar albums with fairly similar songs.
1. SoS
2. SatQ
3a. AS
3b. 59 Sound

These are some of my favorite songs. I can deal with "noise", I just think that some Sink or Swim passages are a bit embarrassing.

embarrassing?! if i knew you personally, i would literally, physically make you eat those words, i would shove SOS in your mouth and make you realize how wonderful it tastes. i'd be like the Dexter of music.
Well that's hostile!

I just linked those songs to prove that my beef with SoS isn't that it's "heavy" or whatever, because it isn't. I just think it sounds pretty corny at places.

do you find bits of 59 sound corny too? i know that's a lot of peoples' beef with that record, but i've never heard that complaint of the SoS.

Boomboxes, Contender, Wooderson, We came to dance, 1930, Red in the morning, Woody and Drive are all in the same tempo and musical style. I'm not saying the 59 Sound isn't like that, because it is to some extent, and so is American Slang. I'm just bringing that up because some guy said "The 59 Sound songs are too samey for my taste which is why I prefer SoS" or something along the lines of that.

Nope, not at all. Brian had matured a lot as a musician by the time he wrote that record.

I have my love and beef for each record.

SoS, I don't dig the guitar parts in the first song, that kind of Ska/latin thing...noo thanks. I can see the roughness and all of bits and pieces that came together as a necessity over placement. I feel like things were still coming together for them, but they made great use of the talents and craft that they had honed up to that point. The high points of that album are fantastic, it starts off pretty good (after that annoying guitar part in "Boomboxes...") then it picks up again really well in the end

SatQ: My gripe is that it is short. Also, The best song (Blue Jeans & White T-shirts), seems short.

59 Sound: Probably my favorite of them over all. I've stated my beef with this record in other threads. I just think this record flows pretty well, and would have been much better if the production was tweaked a little differently.

American Slang: I think that this is a transition record. It seems that they are shedding or are trying to shed the punk feeling atleast in the music for a more rock based sound, more classic than anything. You can see the influences on their sleeves. I guess it will be interesting to see how things shape up for the new album!

I didn't start this thread. It was just a discussion that started in another thread and then someone for some reason made it a thread.

I'm really really really getting into 1930 for the first time. The first half of this album is slowly growing on me.

Twisted Evil come to the dark side, sink or swim rules.

But seriously sink or swim is like that, one day you wake up and its really awesome, I used to only listen to 59 sound, but now I think sink or swim is the best

i had to reply!

it was SOS that caught me totally and completely the first time i heard it ... AMAZING album, not a bad tune on it, and the demos are crazy good too.

but, it is a question of taste! and we should all remember to resepct everyone else's tastes!

TGA are one of the very few bands of whom i love every single record!

but the romance started with SOS - powerful, raw, pure, and catchy! ;-)

imho

peace

Not even gonna step into this debate, but here's the thing: at least TGA made these records so you could have the debate.
