Fantastic!

These are some of my favorite songs. I can deal with "noise", I just think that some Sink or Swim passages are a bit embarrassing.

I said passages, not the entire album.

Like I've pointed out, I love some of the songs on the album, but then again there are some of them that make me feel like overall it's a not so great debut album.

I can't believe what i'm reading here. Sink or Swim is one of the strongest debut albums i've ever heard. This thread is getting ridiculous. If you don't like some bits then don't listen to those bits. It's gritty, heartfelt and doesn't sound like any other band. It stands out over their other releases which are also fantastic.

59 sound uses the am f c g chord combo so much and blantently that it gets annoying, solid album but overall repetitve, American slang, sounds like a weaker 59 sound, which 59 sound is still a god awesome album, so that isn't really saying anything bad about American slang

SOS all the songs sound different from each other, great mixture of slow songs like navisank, to fast, like drive and wooderson, deep and meaning full like 1930. And fun like we came to dance. And all of them include Brian's deep and passionate lyrics as seen on every album there after

Also this forum is named after a song on SOS....ehm navisink, so even the forum thinks its awesome lol!

I'd say most of the songs on SoS sound very much the same.

not a fan of overlly heavy stuff. Personally, my favorite Heavy stuff is The Who, and '78 Springsteen (Darkness is as close to heavy rock as he ever got), and yes I am 19.

Darkness on the edge of town is such a good record.

I think Brian had Badlands in mind when he wrote American Slang (the song).

@JimmyB - So do you lean more toward '59 Sound? I think of that album as being more influenced by classic rock instead of punk, which is probably why it's my favorite.

I can see that. Badlands is great and I love American Slang. It seems like it's not a favorite among a lot of people, but I think it's fantastic.

yeah, and I lean towards the 59 sound. Not a fan of Mosh pits, and Sink or Swim (IN GENERAL) reminds me of that...But SOS did have a few good songs that I like among the newer ones (We came to dance, Something banks , Divorce you keep the diner,). Now that you mention it, I can hear a little of the same style of drumming in American Slang, as I hear in Badlands. Great Drumming style.

American Slang is one of very few songs by Gaslight Anthem that I loved upon the first listen. It just struck me immediately and I thought "This is it, you nailed this one, Brian".

Sink or Swim is very raw but its that raw quality that gives it its charm and uniqueness. Wooderson and 1930 are two of the best Gaslight tracks out there. Navisank Banks, Drive, Angry Johnny, We came to dance and Red at Night are also quality songs as good as their more recent stuff.

Tracks 1,2,7 and 11 do blend together but are decent as well

Sink or Swim is the best.
2. Senor & the Queen
3. American Slang
4. 59 Sound

what??! how is this even an argument? sink or swim is so the best album, followed in order by release date, meaning...
1. sink or swim
2. senor and the queen
3. 59 sound
4. american slang

which is not to say that the quality has been going downhill ever since sink or swim, just that i don't think anything can match it. SOS all way!

embarrassing?! if i knew you personally, i would literally, physically make you eat those words, i would shove SOS in your mouth and make you realize how wonderful it tastes. i'd be like the Dexter of music.

For all the arguing thats going on, people not accepting others opinions, This thread was titled Sink or Swim - The debate after all. Debate. Thats where people put acorss their opinion and others put across theirs. If some don't like it thats fine, if you love it thats ok too. My order is
1. 59 Sound
2. Senor and the queen
3. American Slang
4. Sink or Swim

Love em all though

Well that's hostile!

I just linked those songs to prove that my beef with SoS isn't that it's "heavy" or whatever, because it isn't. I just think it sounds pretty corny at places.

This. I like all the albums almost equally, and it really depends on what I feel like listening at the time. And like the other albums, there really isn't a song on SoS that I wouldn't listen to (yes, I even like "Red in the Morning").

Agreed, one of the things I love the most about Gaslight is the variety between their albums. I don't think I could pick a least favourite! As debuts go though, Sink or Swim is pretty solid imo.

Also I'm beginning to think I'm the only person who's favourite is American Slang Laughing
