The Gaslight Anthem are also a great band for being approachable, as they are happy to mingle with and talk to their fans.

The question for us as forum members is what to do with all that we learn in conversation with the band. Unlike in a formal interview situation, where you know that what you say may end up on the record, talking to your fans outside the venue is a different matter. Conceivably, the guys may express all sorts of opinions on, hypothetically, their gear, their label, their sponsors, and each other.

Much of this would probably be of interest to people on this forum, but it is worth remembering that you may never have learnt what you did, if it hadn't been said off the record. Hence, before posting anything that the guys said, think for a moment whether they may have said the same thing on the record.

We are an unofficial forum and I don't like censorship, but if we still want the guys to come out and talk to us in the years and decades to come, it would be worth giving this matter some thought.

Thanks.

P.S: This is purely a preventative post; nothing's gone wrong (yet). Very Happy

This is a great post and a very important point. In a rare candid moment, a member of Gaslight let slip a very personal bit of information, God knows why, and I made a point of not circulating it here out of respect.

I think part of really caring about a band is respecting their personal lives and personal space as much as possible.

I agree. It's very important to remember that they are people with private lives who deserve privacy. And even if some ino slips in a private conversation it doesn't necessarily mean that it should be shared on a public forum etc.

I have been thinking about this for a few months now and even though i got excited, i never posted anything on here because I want to respect the band's private lives. I love you

I'm pleased people respond positively to this suggestion from 2 years ago. Smile

Although my comments do of course cover 'private lives' info as well, I had actually thought more about comments that could perhaps damage them professionally (such as about their label, sponsors, etc.).

I think the problem is that, at least as far as I know, the guys are really happy with their labels. Side One Dummy did the best they could for the band while they were there, and Mercury has spent crazy money pushing them as a mainstream band with Handwritten. And sponsor-wise, Brian always seems happy with his stuff, plugging now Vox now Fender now Gibson etc etc.

I think it's more likely that they'll let something slip regarding their personal lives when times are tough on tour. Maybe they'll mouth off about a support act or a promoter/venue or something, but apart from Brian none of them seem likely to have a rant about something they don't like, haha.

Oh wow, i wasn't even referring to anything "professional" related such as labels, gear etc. i know in due time it will come out, but i get excited about everything. haha.

I think it's also important to be careful because sometimes they might say something that isn't bad or shouldn't be shared, it's just that sometimes something gets lost in translation if you post it on here in your own words.

Well said.

I just think it's interesting to talk about the ethics of disclosure. This is a message board after all, and we're communicating via the internet, which is a medium with very little real regulation as it is. I think it's a good thing that the board acknowledges a principle of respect for the private lives of people that we're entitled to be more than curious about, given the time and money that each of us invest in them as musicians. I was just identifying with that. And besides, it's good to resurrect important things and it has spurred discussion Smile

Yeah, NASA found something on Mars!

It's an interesting one - do you think Brian Fallon asked if his inspiration for Elsie (three girls I believe) minded having it all laid down on record?

Yes, no names are mentioned, but they'll be known in a certain circle, for sure.

If it is said in concert when anyone can hear for example, Tjhe video posted here where Brian called out some fans who were talking through the whole show....is that okay to talk about?
