Way I see it, they were never really a punk band that overtly expressed down with corporations or yeehaw anarchy fuck the man etc. They are a rising rock band and I'm happy for them.

Also, I only wear Levi's and this rules.

The guy above got it right. That's the difference between Gaslight and a band like Against Me!

And not to be a dick, but when we all get (moderately) famous from making music, then let's make our own decisions on what to do with our financial opportunities.

As much as I love this country, we seem to expect certain things of our artists/entertainers that just aren't realistic. The music industry's in free fall right now, and they're lucky enough to have an opportunity like this. Let's be happy this band can make enough cash to fund their tours and subsequent albums.

I didn't get that at all watching it. To me, it felt like someone was prodding him to think of stuff to say so that they could have something substantial for this promotional video and that's what he came up with. If they asked me, I'd just be like "They fit well. And...um...hmm..."

Maybe like I said just what I got from it we will never know as we where never there or are really able to ask.

I just find it all a bit unnecessary but thats just me. I am not about to drop listening to them or anything like that if they feel its right for them at this time in their career more power to them. I just don't see why they need to do stuff like this surely their music should stand upon its own merit and not need some corporate input. But like someone has already said I guess the industry is pretty fucked right now which is something I hadn't thought of. Once they start doing tours sponsored by relentless I might start to worry a bit more. Razz

Ha, this was...interesting

I still see nowhere how this laments them even becoming close to "selling out"

Dumbest term in the music industry.

Don't really have much to add.

I agree with the sentiment that they can do whatever they think is best for them financially.

That said I felt a little awkward watching the video or maybe the boys looked like they felt awkward. IDK it was weird.

I kind of wish I stumbled on the video myself so I could have watched it with a more open mind.

Do you live on your own yet?

They aren't rich. Brian has said before that the only difference between now and 2006 is that they can afford their rents on time. Would you NOT take a bonus at your job?

Brian still can't afford to buy that house on Cookman Avenue for crying out loud.

Sorry. I had to.

Selling out is going against your beliefs to make easy money. I don't think that's what is going on here at all. Not that anyone said that. I just felt the need to throw in my two cents. To me it comes across like "Hey, this band already wears our stuff. They're popular. They probably would like to earn some extra money. Let's give them a call." I'm very interested in seeing how the final spot comes out.

I think the first poster was using commercial in the European sense of the word, I believe this is a still ad campaign.

Look at it this way: if Levi's are helping to bring us TGA concerts (and perhaps even the oft-whispered about new material that may be coming soon), then that's definitely a good thing. Hell, we should all be buying Levi's from now on. And TGA is totally justified in helping promote one of their sponsors (as if this sort of thing needs justification Rolling Eyes .... some posters here are getting a little too worked up over an innocuous photoshoot).

And what's the worst that can happen? Are you afraid Levi's is going to start dictating the sort of music TGA can make? The only other repercussion that I can think of that could instill this sort of fear in you guys is that your hipster friends might discover that "The Gaslight Anthem *gasp* did a photoshoot for LEVI'S!!!" Oh, the horror!

My bad y'all I'd had a few to drink and the kid above me goes "I'm not calling them sellouts, but..." so that pissed me off cuz the gaslight anthem is anything but sellouts, so I ranted a bit..

Anyways, I think what the hell, who cares, they're wearing levi's, great for them. It's nothign more nothing less. And hey! those jeans fit nicely! So why not get some free pairS?

Well seeing as I said they are not sell outs and I just find the whole thing I find a bit uneasy and unnecessary is a far cry from going OMFG!!! SELLLZZZZ OUTZ. So the need to rant wasn't exactly necessary I would get just as pissed if someone had called them sell outs.

Yes I do have done for a while.

Anyway im gonna stop arguing the point we obviously disagree somewhat and if this carries on we are just going to go round in circles.

It would have been weird if they did a commercial concerning washing-powder saying: "This is the best washing-powder ever, I use it all the time! It's makes my all my Bruce Springsteen shirts so soft and smell so good!", but since it is about jeans, come on...

What if they had thought: "Hmm, we all like Levi's and we'd be getting exposure with this ad, besides from it being fun, but maybe our fans would be thinking of us as sellouts... Let's not do it." Now that would be wrong.

Great link btw IKeeptheDiner, says it well.

I may need to go by a pair of Levi's now. Damnit.

The more I think about it, its tough for musicians to make money these days with everybody pirating music and all. Bands need to find alternative sources of income.

So whatever good for them.
