I'm not sure about Sharks, they're lacking something, not sure what it is. I'm getting convinced they're just a booking agent/managers wet dream.

Didn't your band support them at a live show? or is that an upcoming show?

We're playing with them late March, just by following them on the internet, seems like every 5 seconds they're telling you to buy a shirt, buy their new record, but most importantly buy buy buy buy buy buy a shirt, this design, that design, buy buy buy.

Little overwhelming, I don't want to get into a whole punx thing about it but just needed to vent that a little.

True. Then again they were selling their shirts for $5 a pop when I saw them. A punk rock band does need to eat, and at least their prices are affordable. Can always unfollow them Wink

I would buy a shirt from them, but they use shitty quality shirts (Gildan) for their shirts. So, no thanks.

Don't mean to continue the Sharks bashing party but I've never quite gotten the hype. The music's good enough, I just can't get excited about it.

Interesting to see that people talk of hype, as they are not that big yet if you just look at FB 'likes'.

As for the merch, I think that's pretty much their income; if you follow their posts, it's usually touring while sleeping in crappy vans or on people's floors, etc., so I don;t mind that sales pitch.

As for the music and the whole Sharks thing, there is something very British/English about it (just see their latest video), which people across the ocean may not get, but which is part of their appeal. And they have a great ear for melody and a cracking tune. And they are fun to watch live (James is a great front man).

Plus great lyrics!

Yeah they do punt their merch quite a lot on Facebook but at 10 per Tshirt and a decent selection of designs to choose from, they're at least making an effort unlike some bands who have 1 or 2 boring designs and try to charge 20+ at shows.for them. As Alexander says, I think their merch is pretty much their income for food and petrol (gas). Plus people wearing their Tshirts helps get the name out further.

The British / English thing they have is pretty cool I think.
Just like how Gaslight are a very American band. Sharks just take influence from where they're from.

Also, they haven't really released their first proper album yet. So some of the people who don't 'get' it yet may be won over when they hear it.

I think "across the ocean" is where the majority of their fans are though, I'm unaware of the amount of 'groundwork' they've done in the UK so far, maybe I'm just thinking about them as a punk band in the UK and wondering why no-one I know has heard or listened to them before or whatever. Ahh I dunno.

I'm with you matey, but this is probably the wrong forum to be worrying about the corporate side of things. sharks seem to be in "IT" for the career, which I can't fault them for, however there seems to be a lot of commercialism in their strategy. I prefer bands that do it purely for the love and very little gain (unfortunately).

Sharks new stuff is at best generic and at worst cynical commercial unit shifters.

I don't even mind that they're in it to avoid the inevitable shitty jobs and bullshit that go with being in a band (if that band is a priority) because I know that if any label/money bags came along to me or my friends bands in the UK they'd probably lap it up.
I don't really know where I'm getting at, have never seen them live, so will give them a chance for sure. I've got Joys of Living and there's some really catchy songs, lyrically they're poor in my opinion, but that could eb the only thing they're missing. Who knows, never seen them before. Then again, nor has most of the UK, which might be why a lot of people are double-checking and thinking "Who the fuck are Sharks?"

Like I said, I'm gonna check them out, see what they're like, because judging people solely off the internet is dumb, so we'll see come March 26th when Kieran has a real opinion and not just a keyboard and a 12".

Before seeing them I'd only heard It All Relates and wasn't too excited by it. Then I saw them live. They opened with Trains and I was like "WELL HELLO!" Now I like It All Relates because it was one of those things where I was won over by a live performance of a song I wasn't too into hearing just the recording.

Please keep in mind they really are charging bare minimum for a lot of that merch (as opposed to say Social D who were selling shirts at $30 or $35 each) regardless of what brand they're using for t-shirts. Seriously. I paid $5 at a show.

As far as the frequent posts, I'm sure they get new fans every day and want to alert them to sales, etc. too even though some of us who've been following longer have already heard about it a hundred times. They're seriously just starting out and I don't think they've got anyone helping foot too many bills given their posts (as SNSN already stated) so whatever they make is probably a big help. And maybe they're not aware they're annoying people with their posting.

But hey if you don't like their music/show, you don't like them and that's that. To each his own!

Which illustrates my commercial point, they seem to have backing to get out to America , though haven't really done the circuit in the UK. As a guy who probably sees most majorish US punk and UK punk bands come through(and probably puts these guys on) I can totally see where Keiren is asking ...who??? I reasonably often see bands in Bristol and Sharks are only playing the front bar there for a fiver.

Listening to Sharks reminds me of how I felt when I first heard Gaslight and they just seem to be getting better and better with every song I hear. March 19th can't come quick enough. I've got a feeling 2012 is going to be the best year for music in a very long time Smile

Confession:

I hid the Facebook updates today. I still support the right to inform us about merch on a regular basis, but they literally posted about the merch 4 times in one hour yesterday.

Ha! I typed "Listerally" by accident. Sam obviously invading my brain.
