PostSubject: Gaslight anthem signed to a Major?   Mon May 17, 2010 6:29 pm

Even though Ive never posted on this site before I was on google with a link to the boxer on youtube. But when I clicked the link it said the video was taken down due to copyright claims by "Warner Music Group." Even though it seems unlikely that they wouldn't be on Side One Dummy perhaps they did what rancid did with indestructible and have the distribution be done by a major?

I dunno what the situation is, but noticed that myself last week. I do know Side One posted a status on FB saying they'd be taking the songs down off YouTube, so maybe WMG just handled it for them?

even IF they did, why would a different label have anything to do with contents of a sideonedummy release?

Why? Who cares if they ever sign to a major label? If it's the right move, they should do it. I want every band I like to get as big as they possibly can (and deserve to be).

I know that Warner Brothers is (and has been at least since The 59 Sound) their merchandise company for retail stores and that they design quite a few of the merch as well.

Big labels are also notorious for restricting what bands can produce and in what ways they produce it. At the moment Gaslight have the freedom to do what they want, a big label will want to know what they're doing when they're doing it.

Like a ton of other independent labels, Side One Dummy is distributed by ADA (Alternative Distribution Alliance) Global which is part of the Warner Music Group. This isn't them signed to a major, it's their label having a distribution deal to put albums into stores, help with marketing, etc.

That's exactly how I feel. I'm always annoyed by these selfish hipsters who think that a band exists solely for them, rather than the general public. Of course, I think that S1D is a great label for them, and I don't think it will prevent their audience from expanding.

S1D probably doesn't have the resources as WMG but they can enlist them to get stuff done
it happens a lot actually, the big 4 labels tend to control things

hey i get that some of you get annoyed by fans who voice their opinion that they hope the band doesnt sign to a major...but i think some of you are getting a bit too excited jumping on them and hating on the "selfish hipsters", the guy voiced his opinion, and i appreciate people having respect for the band and whatnot, but i dont think it had to be so harsh. i dunno, not trying to tell anyone what to do here, all im trying to say is there's a fine line between telling others to respect the bands decisions and voicing your own personal opinion, and not letting someone so much as voice a dissenting opinion without criticizing and starting an argument.
