So, references and meanings in 'Bring It On'?

"wait a minute, wait a minute"

It took me a while to figure out why that sounded familiar. It's from 'Please Mr Postman', the 1961 debut single by The Marvellettes for the Tamla/Mowtown label, and made famous by the Beatles and the Carpenters, though I think it's the Mowtown reference that counts here.

Here's the video; the line is at 1:42:

He references The Wizard of Oz with the red heels and wishing for home

pretty straight forward.

Has Brian been married before? Because he references a "first wife" in Great Expectations, and now he's singing about a woman wanting to go back on her vows.

It wouldn't make sense if this was about Hollie. I don't think Brian would make his marital problems so public. But that's just my take on it

"I hear that he tells you he can read your palms..." Fortune telling may be a motif of this album, given this line from AS: "You told us fortunes in American slang"

It may even be a call back to Springsteen's lyrical interest in fortune telling and gypsies.

This song is literally perfect.

The build up compliments the meaning of the song.

His (the main character's) wife is looking outside of their relationship at another man who she thinks she might want to go to and he's saying If you really want to give up our life and family together then go, bring it on, bring on this punk, cuz i know i'll love you better.

great message of the song and i guarantee the chick decides to stick around. love the confidence of the singer.

My queen of the Bronx
Blue eyes and spitfire
I saw you walking back and forth
About another boy
Thinking that you may want to leave

So give me the fevers that just won't break
And give me the children you don't want to raise
And tell me about the cool
He sings to you in those songs
If it's better than my love
Then bring it on

And take it back out to the streets
Where you know you used to be
For the Romeos of town
If I bring you down
And you're tired of those vows
And you're really walking out

So give me the fevers that just won't break
And give me the children you don't want to raise
And tell me about the cool
He sings to you in those songs
If it's better than my love
Baby, bring it on
Oh, bring it on

Stop clicking your red heels and wishing for home
I'm hearing that he tells you he can read your thoughts
Is he better than my love
Better than my love
Is he better than my love
Better than my love
So I found the letters with the reasons to things
You've been feeling
That he says they'll never know
And you say the night just got too cold
Well everybody's cold
Who's gonna keep my baby warm
Who's gonna keep my baby warm
When everybody goes

So give me the fevers that just won't break
And give me the children you don't want to raise
And tell me about the cool
He sings to you in those songs
If it's better than my love

Well then wait a minute, wait a minute
Was he not good to you
Wait a minute, wait a minute
Was he not good to you
Wait a minute, wait a minute
You don't know what's good for you

So give me the fevers that just won't break
And give me the children you don't want to raise
And tell me about the cool
He sings to you in those songs
You've been baby for so long
Come on, bring it on
Oh, bring it on

Stop clicking your red heels and wishing for home
I'm hearing that he tells you he can read your thoughts
If he's better than my love
If he's better than my love
If he's better than my love
Better than my love
If he's better than my love
If he's better than my love
Then go on, take it all

hmm, i guess it could be a reference, but it doesnt seem quite so obvious and overt to me. regardless, i love this song (i mean "please mr postman," but also "bring it on"). no other version i've heard sounds as good. heard my brother listening to the carpenters' version of this song and i had to set him straight.

Awesome. Brian clears it up pretty well in the forum's own interview!

"I'm not the leaving person, and I'm not the person saying "if you want to leave me for whatever you think is better out there..." I was the person shot in the crossfire."

I thought it was cool how he cleared that one up cuz that's been a puzzle for me. Now as to who he's stuck between...we may never know...

Haha, I don't see how that clears it up at all. So he's not the narrator and not... who? I can't seem to wrap my head around the way he phrased that.

It sounds to me like he's stuck between two friends whose relationship is on the rocks because of a 3rd person.

Unless (and this is way more out there) Brian's the guy who can read palms and sings cool in those songs... In which case this song takes on a whole new level of interest in my opinion because of the strange perspective it takes.

I have another theroy on who it might be about. But I'm not gonna go into it as I don't really feel comfertable speculating about Brian's private life.

I'm sure if you know a bit about Brian's life and you think about it, you'll probably come up with it soon enough anyway.

Why is that "way more out there"? To me, that's the obvious interpretation of what Brian said in the interview.

Maybe so, but it would be casting Brian in the role of a woman-thief. Which is possible, but it would be a unorthodox point of view to take.

I'm not sure I agree that this would be so unorthodox. Artists write about their experiences which aren't always pretty.

One other potential interpretation of the song is that it is about his parents but I don't know whether the facts of Brian's childhood support this.

On another note, I don't agree with the transcription of the lyrics above. I don't hear "the cool he sings TO YOU in those songs . . ." but rather " the cool he sings YOUR WAY in those songs . . ."

In any event, this is hands down my favorite track on the record. It has so much damned heart.

On a re-listen (specifically for this purpose) I did actually hear "he sings your way". Everyone should try it. It very well might be right.

EDIT: I'm not sure what I'm hearing, but I think the first word after sings is either you or your.

It is a bit muddled. Hopefully the official release will come with the full lyrics. I'm most anxious to see the official lyrics to We Did it When We Were Young. That one has the most audible ambiguities for me.
