The Gaslight Anthem Speak American
3/23/10 at 6:35 PM

It’s been a steady climb for New Jersey nostalgia-rockers the Gaslight Anthem: The band played the record-release party for their last album, 2008’s The ’59 Sound, at the cozy, now-shuttered Tribeca Knitting Factory, but have spent the time since ceaselessly plugging it on the road, working their way up to a boatload of international festivals, sold-out Terminal 5 status the last time they were in town and even shared a stage with their god, Bruce Springsteen. Next up is their new album, American Slang, out June 15, previewed with today’s release of the first single and title track. It’s instantly recognizable for anyone who’s ever heard a Gaslight Anthem: a big, bright guitar line; a chorus seemingly engineered by highly paid rock-and-roll scientists for maximum sing-along-ability; lyrics about tattoos and dreams and fortunes and long-gone beauties. (A few representative American Slang song titles: “The Diamond Church Street Choir,” “The Queen of Lower Chelsea,” “We Did It When We Were Young.”) For better or for worse, Gaslight still sound like an act that might be parodying a band very similar to themselves. Since “American Slang” is already stuck in our heads, we’re going with “for better.”

Edit - I had initally posted this as follows:
"sold-out Terminal 5 status the last time they were in town [... censored, as idiotic comment]"

Bullshit to censor something.

"and even a shared stage with their god, Bruce Springsteen."

There's your line. And who the hell cares? Sharing a stage with Springsteen is a big deal. I don't agree with the wording but it's far from an idiotic comment.

Well I don't think Brian would take too kindly to having Springsteen called his 'god' considering he is Christian and to claim anyone else as your god is sin. Maybe not an idiotic comment but it is an ignorant one.

I don't quite get the "[... censored, as idiotic comment]" , freedom of speech is a wonderful thing. I'm sure growing up Brian never even dreamed that one day Bruce Springsteen would join him on stage to sing (regardless if he sang the correct words or not) a song that he himself wrote or maybe even have his own band that would make it as far as gaslight has.

Oh and PS. If your from Jersey, Springsteen pretty much is God. Its like edited into their bibles and shit

ok, ok, ok; I meant to change it to 'omitted' instead of 'censored', as I don't agree with censorship, but I had other things to do

and ok, it wasn't 'idiotic', it was 'misguided', 'uninformed', and 'ignorant', but not 'idiotic'

oh, and it was also 'presumptious' to claim that Springsteen was 'their' god, seeing it was really only Brian to whom the Boss has meant a lot since way back when
