Every ATEC Major at my school has to take this class, The Literature of Sci-Fi and Fantasy, at some point. Usually, it's some variation of material including Harry Potter, Dune, Lord of the Rings, sci-fi short stories, whatev.
Wasn't really all that pumped about it until I go to the first day of class and find out it's all about Comic Books this semester! The main focus will be on Batman and Superman, and naturally we're digging into them more from a critical perspective regarding culture, archetypes, etc.

Anyhow, I thought that was pretty awesome. I'm not a real big comics buff, but I've read several story arcs and major graphic novels (i.e. TDKR), and grew up on that 90's animated Batman show (which was incredible).
What about y'all? Any comics fans out there? What's your favorite?

Oh yes, I really got back into comics a few years ago.

I do subscribe to UK editions of Spider-man, Batman and Superman, but I also read some European graphic novels. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comics are great as well.

The darker the story and images, the better. Spider-man usually has very good, introspective story lines. Superman has too many aliens.

I have really enjoyed the New Avengers and Secret Invasion series drawn by Leinil Yu. I am a big fan of his (I think he is the best comic artist out there), and I even have two pieces of original art by him (one full page page and one prelim from New Avengers).

If you want dark, try Preacher, saying that any of the Garth Ennis stuff is great. Just a Pilgrim, The Boys and the Herogasm spin off. I love The walking Dead too, also have a look at Y the last man.

I think I would be a big comic fan, but I'm really not into the whole dark, gritty, gory style which seems to be present in every single one. I just want something light-hearted and fun.

I read 'Watchmen' and a couple of others, but liked 'The Umbrella Academy' so much more! I'm always on the lookout for something similar!

I bought and read Batman: Year One the other day, and wow, it was really good. Downside to comics is that they're over so quick! But still, well worth it. Now I see where a lot of the inspiration for the modern Batman comics, toons, and movies comes from, stylistically and all. And Batman Begins' plot takes a lot of points from it, which is cool.
