Neil Young is one of the all time greats, no doubt about it. Heart of Gold stands as a perfect song in my mind, and his influence on grunge and modern rock is undeniable.
I follow an NPR (National Public Radio, for those of you across the pond) show, All Song Considered. On a podcast a couple of weeks ago, they had this awesome 12 minute version of Down By The River from Young's new, and massive, Archives Vol 1. Best version I've ever heard, far and away. I believe it's from a 1970 show. Amazing stuff all the way around and a must listen, so I thought I'd share.
You can stream it off the show's site: All Songs Considered (<<<click)
Just scroll to the bottom of the song list, it's the last one. Hope you like! If not... Mad

I love Neil Young. He's one of my dad's favourite artists of all time so I've been hearing him for all my life.
I'd like to see the book from that Archive set, costs so much for the whole thing though. XD Only for huuuuge fans... or people with lots of money to spare..?
Down by the River is one of my favourites.

Haha, me too. Yeah, I don't have that much money to burn either. And to think, it's just volume 1!

I'd say Heart of Gold tops the list... Old Man is another great. Down By The River, Rockin' In The Free World, and Hey Hey My My pull in to the short list as well. You?

Rocking in a Free World and Down by the River are favs of mine too.

Hmmm, also Cowgirl in the Sand, Cinnamon Girl, Down to the Wire, Sugar Mountain. I could probably go on. And I'm sure I've not heard the majority of his stuff.

Yeah, with someone as prolific as Young, it's hard to keep up with everything unless your hardcore!
And I forgot about Cinnamon Girl. Ace song.

Anything with a good bit of guitar. 'Though with Neil Young that's almost everything.
You've inspired me to listen to him now. Smile

I remember I was at guitar center and jammin with this guitarist/singer who's far and away better than I am. Talked for a bit and turns out he makes a living doing recording and studio sessions. Knows his stuff and all, but he'd never listened to Neil Young!! I was like Shocked

Can't argue with that! Heart of Gold and Johnny Cash's Hurt were the first two songs I learned to play.

See, modern country gives country as a whole a bad name. Nothing wrong with guys like Cash and Neil. And Neil knows how to rock too.

Amen. Plus, rock and country really blended more back in the 60's and 70's. You couldn't really separate the two, with bands like Creedence Clearwater Revival and such.

Saw Neil Young in Aberdeen not that long ago and he was amazing! First time i'd heard any of his music. I knew who he was, but never listened to any of his songs, and he blew me away. Great songwriter.

Aye, me too. His gigs cost a fortune though. 'Though I'm sure it'd be worth it.

Yeah, these greats do cost a bit. i.e. Paul McCartney is coming to Dallas soon, but the tickets are going to cost a ton and I'm sure the most reasonably priced seats are crap. Plus, it's at the new Cowboys Stadium, which happens to charge $30 for parking. :\

Yeah. I remember when Neil played, I think it was Brixton Academy, London, last year tickets were about £60/£70 which is paying for his big name because normally gigs there are only £20. Not a huge venue.
But then I suppose when an act plays a stadium gig you have to pay more.

That sucks about parking. But I do like the name of Cowboy Stadium. Haha.

Ikes, 60 pounds is what... about $120 USD? Wow. And I don't know if stadiums always cost more, but Cowboy Stadium is the brand spankin' new home of the Dallas Cowboys. The thing is friggin' epic. They went way over budget and are having to recoup the costs... so I get the feeling that's what I'd be paying for.

Ah yeah true true. We have Wembley stadium. I saw Muse there. I think that ticket was about £45 with all the fees.
Stadium gigs have more lights, screens, speakers, bars etc. so I guess it all adds up.
But yeah, £60 is like the cost of a one day festival. XD

That's my worry with Gaslight. The show they did here a few months back was at an awesome, tiny venue
called The Granada. It's an old converted movie theater, and we had a
blast.
I know they'll always be cool themselves, but you get to a point where you have to play the bigger venues most of the time so more people can come, but then it's not the same anymore. Costs more and loses the spirit... IDK, we'll see. I just hope they come back here before they get too big! There's no Texas show listed on the rest of their tour Sad

Awww, I don't know when I'm going to get to see them next either. Sad
I saw them in a nice small venue, I know what you mean, small venues are definitely better. At least for favourite bands anyway. I've seen Funeral for a Friend three times and each time it was in a smaller venue, which is normally the other way round - the venues get bigger, the last gig was def. the best ('though it was my 18th birthday too, haha).
It's nice to be close to the band/stage.
I'm sure Gaslight will always play smaller shows as well even if they play bigger gigs. Although then tickets will be more popular. Get in there first!
